In the year 1525 the farmers rised up and attacked the castles. They plundered them and the Hohenecken castle was one of those. So the Lord of the castle decided to put all his money and other belongings of value in a chest.
He asked this squire to assist him and bring the chest into the forest. They digged a hole in the ground and bedded the chest in it. When they were done, they could hear the farmers come. So the Lord of the castle decided to stay in the forest and wait, because he feared the farmers could murder him.
So at night he laid down to sleep nearby the buried treasure. In the middle of the night he woke up and heard a noise. It was the sound of a digging shovel. The squire wanted to steal the chest. The Lord of the castle took his sword and fought against his unfaithful squire and in the end he killed him. He buried the squire took his chest and went back to the castle, because the farmers were gone.
But every night the people in the village could hear an awful noise, like groaning. It was the squire soul which was not buried in consecrated ground and could not rest in peace. The Lord of the castle went to the monastery in Kaiserslautern and asked a monk to celebrate a mass and consecrate this place. As a sign for this, he erected this wooden cross you can see over here. From that time on the nights were quit again.
